Michael John McCarthy is a musician, sound designer & composer for stage & screen.

He has worked on over 80 theatrical productions, including nine Scotsman Edinburgh Fringe First award winners. Work for screen includes the documentaries Where You're Meant To Be and Pitching Up

He is the creator & composer of The Dream Frequencies, an audio theatre piece produced by the Traverse Theatre.  He is also the lead artist on Turntable, a participatory arts & storytelling project, produced by Red Bridge. He is currently under commission to the National Theatre of Scotland, Dundee Rep Theatre, & Visible Fictions.

​He has toured internationally with Zoey Van Goey, Lord Cut-Glass and Aidan Moffat, and has played on albums by Emma Pollock, Alasdair Roberts, RM Hubbert, Trembling Bells & Bonnie Prince Billy, and Niall Connolly amongst others. His new band Album Club are due to release their debut LP on Last Night From Glasgow in 2022.

Michael John is the musical supervisor & co-sound designer on Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of), winner of the 2022 Olivier Award for Best Entertainment or Comedy Play.
